FAQ on the NDIS
What is the NDIS?
There are around 4.3 million Australians who have a disability. Within the next five years the NDIS will provide an estimated 500,000 Australians aged under 65, who have permanent and significant disability with funding for supports and services. For many people, it will be the first time they receive the disability support they need. The scheme is run by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).
Am I eligible for the NDIS?
Am I eligible for the NDIS? To qualify for an individual support package with the NDIS, the following requirements need to be met:
- have a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to take part in everyday activities
- be aged less than 65 when you first access the scheme
- be an Australian citizen, live in Australia and hold a permanent visa or hold a Protected Special Category Visa. You can also use the Eligibility checklist to determine if you potentially quality for the scheme.
How do I apply?
If you meet the eligibility criteria you can ask to become a participant by completing an Access Request Form. If you are already receiving disability support services, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) will contact you when it becomes available in your area.
What can be funded?
The NDIS has been designed to suit the needs of every individual, and for our clients it can cover things like:
- Daily personal activities
- Transport to participate in community, social, economic and daily life activities
- Workplace support to gain or maintain employment
- Therapeutic supports, including behaviour support
- Help with household tasks
- Assessment of aids or equipment, including set up and training
When and where does the NDIS start?
The NDIS is available across Australia and is rolling out in Western Australia. Check your state and territory to find out about the NDIS in your area.
How is my NDIS plan developed?
Once the NDIS confirms you are an eligible participant, a planner will arrange to meet with you. Attending a planning meeting, either in person, or over the phone, is the best way for the NDIS to gather all your information to develop the best plan for you. During your planning meeting, make sure you discuss the goals/activities/tasks you want to achieve with your ECEI Coordinator, LAC or NDIA planner. They will undertake a full review of the supports and services you currently receive. Using the information discussed, your planner will then develop a support plan that best meets your needs and your goals. Drake Medox would also welcome any opportunity to talk throughout the planning process to discuss your goals and potential support requirements.
How do I select my NDIS service provider?
When you have an approved NDIS plan, you need to understand the different budgets and who can help you start using your plan, and how your plan is managed. It is now up to you to choose what supports and services you feel you need to achieve your goals, who provides them and when and where they are delivered. When you’re working on your support plan, you can nominate Drake Medox at any time as your service provider. Once your support plan and budget are approved, you then select your service provider. If Drake Medox is selected, in accordance with the plan, we then develop and implement your “person centred” support plan working closely with you and your team.
